Steven Johnson ("Everything Bad is Good for You: How Today's Popular Culture is Actually making Us Smarter") will discuss Gaming and Learning at the third John Seely Brown Symposium on Technology and Society. He will address the broader significance of electronic games, the gaming culture, and how the principles of creating games that people want to play over and over can apply to the learning process in general.

(NOTE CHANGED TIME) Dev Session and EA Talk (FREE VIDEO GAMES)

Hi everyone,

We'll be continuing our development sessions on the 3rd floor of the Duderstadt Center this week. However, for this week only, the time has changed and we'll be starting at 7pm instead of 6. We will also begin by meeting in the Advanced Graphics Windows Training Room (right down the hall from our usual room).

This week, we are being visited by our ex-President Alex Kerfoot who will talk to us about his experience in the games industry and as a software engineer for SPORE. We are also being joined by Jackie Shuler, Electronic Arts' University Relations Rep and some recent interns of EA. Their experience should provide plenty of great information for anyone interested. We will also have food at the event and will be giving away some free games as well. The talk itself will start shortly after 8pm.

It should be a fun and insightful night, I hope you can make it out.

The Binary Zoo: All of the Colors with None of the Drugs

Not too long ago, I was asked to check out a game called mono, a free game created by a studio called the Binary Zoo. Since I'm always up for playing new games (especially free ones) I decided to give mono a try. The result was, simply put, amazing.

Skill-less multiplayer games?

Watching newbies get destroyed at the Halo 2 tourney yesterday got me thinking about whether inexperienced players ever have a chance of doing well against even somewhat experienced opponents. Check out the article and feel free to comment

Halo 2 Tournament

Hello all,

This is a reminder for the Halo 2 Tournament coming up soon. Our Halo 2 Tournament will be held on Saturday, September 16th in the Wedge Room of West Quad at 7:00pm. West Quad is the residence hall adjacent to the Union and the Wedge Room is on the second floor.

The entry fee will be $2 and you will be asked to show an MCard as proof of being a U of M student. The tournament will take place between 4 man teams. The first prize team will take $160. We will be providing complimentary free pizza at the tournament. In addition, we will have some door prizes as well as a few games that require non-traditional Halo skills to win. If you are unable to find a team of your own to pair up with, we'll be happy to help you find a team at the tournament.

Mass Meeting

Hello all new and prospective members,

Wolverine Soft will be holding it's Mass Meeting today Thursday, September 14th in the Koessler Room of the Michigan League at 7:00pm. The Michigan League is located next to the fountain north of the central campus Diag and the Koessler Room is on the 3rd floor.

We will be discussing what our group is about. We aim to be video games on this campus, be it as an connection to the industry, project resource, or recreational group. We make games and play games. Members do not need any prior experience to contribute to the group and to projects, the only thing we ask for is your enthusiasm. We have many connections to game companies, have numerous alumni inside the industry, and aim to help our fellow members in their endeavors.

The officers will discuss their goals for the upcoming year and we will demo game projects we've made in the past. I hope you can find a fun and productive outlet in WSoft, as we officers have had in the past. I personally went to a meeting on a whim, and this has come to be a crucial part of my college experience.

Looking forward to the coming year,

Mohammad Hussain Dar
Wolverine Soft President

Open Source

Having recently considered the issue of source code licensing, I decided to write an article describing the possibility of an industry shift to an open source model.

Feel free to contribute your thoughts on the matter of open source game development.
