You've seen the man, now be the man. Stephen Colbert is America's best reference for its political candidates. His tough questions expose the truthiness of the situation and show all the candidates for what they really are: not legitimate. Play as Stephen in your goal to lower the legitimacy of each candidate by asking the hard questions guaranteed to fluster them. Developed in the 5th annual 48 hour game development contest.

Granicus

Ships are controlled with either wired Xbox 360 controllers or a keyboard. Generic joystick controls are possible but not yet configurable. Granicus is controlled with amouse. This game is two to three players, as the Granicus player is optional.

Two players play as space ships shaped roughly as "equals" signs. Their objective is to shoot at and destroy each other. Players may dodge incoming shots either by simply moving out of the way, or by rotating the ship such that the shot flies through the gap between the "lines". Shots bounce off of the perimeter, and may cause friendly fire damage. A third player may control "Granicus" using a mouse, and have the ability to draw barriers across the screen. These barriers block both the shots and the ships themselves. The objective of the Grannicus player is to prevent the ships from destroying each other, winning if more than one ship is remaining at the end of the time limit.

** Improvements since 48 hour contest:

Support for keyboard controls for players 1 and 2.
Non-configurable joystick support for player 1.
Lines no longer draw farther than their maximum length.
Lines disappear immediately if there are too many lines on the screen.

Lines turn green if they can be placed, red if they cannot (if there are 5 lines on the screen).
Sounds for line hit, ship hit, and ship destroy.**

PlayPlace was my final project for EECS 494 - Computer Game Design and Development, completed in December 2005. The game uses Direct3D 9.0 for the 3D graphics API. It is designed to be a multiplayer game using Xbox 360 controllers for PC. However, it can be played with the keyboard (single player only), but using an Xbox 360 controller is highly recommended. A fluid physics simulation is the core element of the gameplay, meaning the primary task for the players is to interact with the movement of the balls. The fluid physics are based on the SIGGRAPH paper from 2003 entitled "Particle-Based Fluid Simulation for Interactive Applications". Programming the physics was the most challenging part of the project, and I think it turned out very well. Below you can download the game, view screenshots or read the original design document (which is drastically different from the end result).

"The leaf was not always a leaf. Once, the leaf was a person. One day, this person stumbled upon the evil witch's castle, between our world and the world of the void. The witch transformed the person into a leaf, and flung the leaf far away, toward the world of the void. The closer one gets to the world of the void, the fewer things exist. If an object gets too close, its existence threshold is reached, and it ceases to exist entirely. This would have happened to the leaf, but luckily for it, a gust of wind prevented it from going too far toward the void. Saved from nonexistence, the leaf must find its way back to the witch's castle to break the curse, and return to reality." Draw lines of wind to help the leaf get back to reality, and prevent the leaf from falling to the ground, getting eaten, or catching on fire! Includes 6 challenging levels, and unlockable cheats.

You are a sleepkeeper. It is your mission to help the person you are assigned to have the longest, happiest dreams possible. Tonight, you have been assigned to Puffball. In the game, you will see Puffball inside a cloud. The cloud represents Puffball's dream, and the more engrossed he is in his dream, the larger the cloud will be. The dream cloud will gradually shrink over time. If the dream shrinks to nothing, Puffball will wake up from his sleep. To prevent this from happening, you must let good things enter Puffball's dream. When a good thing enters the dream, it will get larger. However, good things are not the only things trying to enter the dream. There are also bad things that try to enter the dream, and if they enter, the dream will get smaller. To prevent this, you must use the mouse to draw rainbow-colored dream lines to intercept the bad things. When a dream line collides with any thing, both the line and the thing will disappear. Dream lines do not differentiate between good and bad things, so you must be careful to draw your lines to intercept the bad things while letting the good things into the dream.

Squatter House

The Game:

Many people in the world could use some rest and relaxation. One day, one of these people receives a letter informing them that they have won a free vacation home from a real estate sweepstakes. The person arrives at their new vacation home, eager for a calming experience, only to find a squatter has taken up residence! You can play as the squatter or the rightful owner of the home, who will chase the squatter. If you are the chaser, you must chase and catch the squatter so you can kick him out and finally relax. If you choose to be the squatter, you will win if you can "lay claim" to your territory, by getting to enough waypoints in the house. In the game, you will choose a character and a house plan (maze), and your opponent will do the same. Each player is confined by the house plan they choose, but your opponent doesn't have to choose the same house plan as you. This means that while you are bound by the walls in your house plan, the other player may be able to disregard some of those walls! This game is multiplayer only, over a network. Featured characters include Lil John, Howard Dean, Sexy Grandpa, and more!

Features:

The quickest networked multiplayer game known to man! Single rounds of the game generally last less than 10 seconds, so you don't even have to set aside time during your day to play!

Familiar, yet innovative gameplay

Choose from 6 characters, each with a humorous story

10 different Powerups to give you an edge over your opponent

Pick up Bling so you can use your character's Special Move

Make your own mazes to put into the game!

Crisis Wolverine: Insurrection Green is the top down RPG that took this campus by storm. It is best described as Final Fantasy here on the U of M campus. This highly addictive, simplistic four hour game was... well... pure genius. The hard work really paid off and the development team can happily boast several thousand downloads.

Crisis Wolverine begins with the main character finding himself stranded on the campus of U of M during spring break. He soon uncovers MSU's dastardly plans to overtake the campus and must find it within himself to stop it. Those he encounters along the way will shape his destiny, and the destiny of the campus itself.

WolverineWare

WolverineWare is the first true Wolverine Soft community project in a while. Development of this game will be done by programmers, artists, musicians, designers, beginners and experts alike. The idea behind the game is that it will be like WarioWare, Inc. (the GBA game) with a WolverineSoft/UofM theme. It will consist of a huge number of simple, short (as in, a few seconds long) "microgames" each developed by an individual or group of Wolverine Soft members.

Interested in joining the Wolverine Ware development team? Come to one of our development sessions on Wednesday nights. Email <a href="http://wolverinesoft.org/mailto:wsoft.president@umich.edu>Hayden for more information about the meetings and joining.

[Download The Wolverine Ware SDK][2]
This includes the Wolverine Ware engine and a demo microgame.

Instructions for setting up the SDK and programming a microgame can be found <a href="http://wolverinesoft.org//projects/WolverineWare/WolverineWare_docs.htm>here. These slides also contain documentation for the utility classes included with the SDK.

Microgames

These are all of the microgames that have been conceived so far. Some are complete and fully functional in the game, others are in development, and others are still just ideas. If you would like to submit a new microgame concept send an email to <a href="http://wolverinesoft.org/mailto:wsoft.president@umich.edu>Hayden. If you would like to work on any of the incomplete microgames below, contact the creator. If you begin work on or complete one of the microgames below, email <a href="http://wolverinesoft.org/mailto:wsoft.president@umich.edu>Hayden so the status will be updated.
